(February 5, 2019) \u2014 When you receive a package in the mail, there\u2019s a good chance a UP Paper product protected the contents. The nearly century-old paper mill in Manistique manufactures 100% recycled paper products found in Amazon boxes, but also paper for grocery bags, take-out style bags, and wrapping paper. Thanks to commitments from private investors and the state, the company is thriving as it prepares to enter its second century of operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mill\nopened as Manistique Paper in 1920. Over the decades the company was a\nsignificant employer in the area and an essential part of the business\ncommunity. Unfortunately, a series of financial problems and difficulties\nforced the company to close its doors in 2015 after 95 years in business.\nRoughly one year later, the Zellar family and other investors stepped in to\npurchase it from mBank, which had previously helped keep the business afloat in\n2012 with assistance from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nhistoric mill reopened as UP Paper in the summer of 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UP Paper\nPresident and CEO Lars Dannberg recalled, \u201cI came in here in 2015, and I was\nselling used equipment at the time and consulting for financial people. I found\nsome money from local people, and we started up in the spring of 2016. We had a\ntough time at the beginning, and now we\u2019re doing great.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nNovember 2018, the MEDC announced an award of $1.9 million in collateral that\nwill support UP Paper\u2019s working capital line. The money could allow the mill to\naccess $4.25 million in a working capital line of credit.. \u201cThe support from\nMEDC allows UP Paper to purchase a new capital equipment,\u201d said Alan Barr, the\nCEO and Executive Director of Schoolcraft Tourism &amp; Commerce. \u201cThe new\nequipment will improve operating efficiencies and allow them to manufacture higher\nquality paper which can get them into higher markets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UP Paper\nhas boosted the local job market as well. Since reopening, UP Paper has hired\n97 employees. Current plans call for four new full-time employees in the next\nhalf a year and at least another four in the two years that follow. Barr said\nthe quality jobs the mill offers have a cascading effect on Manistique and the\nUP as a whole. \u201cOne of the things people noticed when the mill closed was that\ntruck stops at the end of the state started to lose business,\u201d he recounted.\n\u201cThere was a decrease in business in the Marinette, Wisc., Menominee and St.\nIgnace truck stops.\u201d\n\nBarr said UP Paper\u2019s stability helps bring a\nsense of stability to the area, raising the spirit of Manistique. \u201cFor the\nbetter part of a century, when steam has risen up from that mill you knew paper\nwas being made, which means money is being made and jobs sustained,\u201d he\nconcluded. \u201cIt would have really harmed our local economy if that mill had\nstayed closed. It\u2019s so exciting to have it open and to know that they\u2019re\nproviding paper to national companies like Amazon.\u201d Thanks to UP Paper, the\nhistoric mill remains an economic driver in the area, and a key contributor to\nManistique\u2019s vitality. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANISTIQUE, Michigan.
