(November 20,\n2018) Entrepreneurial spirit runs deep in the family behind the iconic Story\nKromer brand. In 2001, the original Stormy Kromer company in Milwaukee was\nselling just 3,800 of its beloved six-panel wool caps per year. When Bob\nJacquart, CEO and owner of Jacquart Fabric Products learned that the business\nwas in danger of folding, he bought it. Today, with his daughter Gina Jacquart\nThorsen at the helm, Stormy Kromer is thriving, selling more than 100,000 caps\nannually, along with a wide variety of apparel and accessories. Kromer products\ncan now be found coast-to-coast in stores like Cabelas, Gander Outdoors and\nL.L. Bean as well as in independent retail shops such as Getz\u2019s in the Upper\nPeninsula, and others from Montana to New Hampshire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although she initially had no\nintention of joining the family business, Thorsen, who serves as president of\nthe Stormy Kromer Division of Jacquart Fabric Products, found she couldn\u2019t stay\naway. After a decade in Texas, in\n2010 she and her husband finally returned to the U.P. Thorsen has always seen something special in\nthe region she calls home. \u201cI was raised in such an entrepreneurial household \u2014\nI always felt this pull towards business,\u201d she explains. \u201cThere\u2019s no place like\nthe U.P. The work ethic here is outstanding and there\u2019s a spirit of adventure\nand innovation. It\u2019s really an incredible place to live and work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thorsen also values the supportive business climate in\nthe community. Local CEOs know and respect each other and share advice and\nresources, and area non-profits like Northern Initiatives provide loans and business\nexpertise. She notes, \u201cOver the past twenty years, Northern Initiatives has\nbeen a great resource for us, providing things like equipment loans, trainings,\nand more. We\u2019re very\nfortunate to work in a business-friendly place. We have such a unique culture\nhere, and we\u2019re proud that the Stormy Kromer brand is a part of that.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The local community is just as grateful for Stormy Kromer\nand the Jacquart family. InvestUP CEO Marty Fittante says, \u201cThis small family business\nhas played a large leadership role in our community. They have created good\njobs, provided on-the-job training, and brought positive attention to our\nregion. The family is also personally involved in a number of projects and\norganizations that better our community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under Thorsen\u2019s leadership, Stormy\nKromer has expanded far beyond the original men\u2019s wool cap while staying true\nto its 100 percent made-in-America roots. One of her first steps was to\nintroduce a women\u2019s product line. \u201cThat was huge,\u201d Thorsen says. \u201cFor more than\n100 years this company never had a women&#8217;s product. Figuring out how to keep\nthe functionality, durability and ruggedness while making it feminine has been\nfantastic. One of the ladies\u2019 styles is our third best selling product today.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most recently, Thorsen expanded the\napparel and accessories into an entirely new direction: pets. The reception has\nbeen tremendous. \u201cPeople send us pictures all the time. Tons of them feature\ndogs wearing Kromers meant for humans. Clearly there was a very urgent need\nthat needed to be met,\u201d she laughs. The pet line, which debuted this past\nsummer with a fashion show featuring shelter dogs, has been the best-selling\nnew product line this season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stormy Kromer\u2019s appeal has brought\nattention to the Upper Peninsula region. The original Stormy Kromer cap recently\nclaimed the 2018 title for the \u201cCoolest Thing Made in Michigan\u201d at the Michigan\nManufacturers Association Excellence Awards. The Kromer has even gone\nHollywood. A main character in season one of the television show <em>Fargo<\/em> wore a Kromer, as did <em>Parks and Recreation<\/em>\u2019s Leslie Knope and\nAlan Arkin in <em>The Santa Clause 3<\/em>. The\nbiggest champion of the brand has been actor Jeff Daniels. Thorsen says, \u201cHe\u2019s\nbeen to our factory a few times. He\u2019s got quite a collection. He even appeared\non the <em>Today Show<\/em> wearing our stuff.\nMy phone started lighting up at seven o&#8217;clock in the morning with people\ntelling me to turn on the TV.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most rewarding parts of\nrunning Stormy Kromer is the opportunity to act as the keeper of the legendary\nbrand. Thorsen reflects, \u201cPeople have told us they\u2019re the fourth generation in their\nfamily to wear a Kromer, or that they\u2019ve gotten married in their caps or buried\na loved one wearing a Kromer. I love that the people who make our Kromers have\nbeen wearing them for generations.
