{"id":10623,"date":"2021-09-27T12:10:33","date_gmt":"2021-09-27T12:10:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.investupmi.com\/?p=10623"},"modified":"2021-09-27T12:15:04","modified_gmt":"2021-09-27T12:15:04","slug":"first-year-enrollment-increase-at-up-universities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.investupmi.com\/index.php\/2021\/09\/27\/first-year-enrollment-increase-at-up-universities\/","title":{"rendered":"First-year enrollment increases at all four U.P. universities expected to boost U.P. economy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All four U.P. universities\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lssu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lake Superior State<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mtu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michigan Tech<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nmu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Northern Michigan<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/nmu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Finlandia<\/a>\u2014saw increases in their first-year student enrollment this year. The growth is expected to bring in thousands of dollars across the U.P.&#8217;s economy. After an uncertain future during the pandemic, the increases provide relief for both the universities and the U.P. as a whole. The focus is now shifting to creating opportunities that will help those students stay in the U.P. after college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experiencing growth in both 2020 and 2021, LSSU&#8217;s new student population increased by 6.9% this year. LSSU is one of the only universities in the state that has seen growth for multiple years in a row. MTU has its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mtu.edu\/news\/2021\/09\/welcome-huskies-incoming-class-is-diverse-smart-and-the-largest-since-1982.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">largest incoming freshman class since 1982<\/a>, seeing a 23% increase in first-year student enrollment and an overall increase of 102 students. Finlandia welcomed its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finlandia.edu\/news\/growth-at-finlandia-largest-incoming-class-in-five-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">largest incoming class in five years<\/a>, increasing its overall enrollment by 6% and bringing its total enrollment to 430 students. NMU saw a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.nmu.edu\/nmu-sees-increase-first-year-students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than 10% increase in first-year students<\/a>\u201420.4% of which were out-of-state. Additionally, a larger percentage of NMU&#8217;s incoming class was made up of students of color, growing by nearly 15% from a year ago. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baycollege.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bay College<\/a> also had a 7.5% increase in enrollment in both new and returning students.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All four U.P. universities\u2014Lake Superior State, Michigan Tech, Northern Michigan, and Finlandia\u2014saw increases in their first-year student enrollment this year.
