Portage Lake Lift Bridge becomes National Landmark by the ASCE

The Portage Lake Lift Bridge is now a National Historic Engineering Landmark, designated as such during a ceremony on Friday, June 17th, by the American Society of Civil Engineers. In addition to this designation, the bridge has received a State Historic Civil Engineering Award.

The idea to present the bridge with this award began with two Michigan Tech students, Emma Beachy and Michael Prast, who worked with their professor as an advisor while they did the necessary research and interviews and submitted paperwork. To be eligible, the landmark must be older than 50 years old, have historical significance, and have contributed to both the civil engineering profession and contributed to the nation or larger region.
